iGEM Okinawa is the first synthetic biology startup team to emerge from Okinawa, Japan, born out of the collaboration between Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), University of the Ryukyus, and Okinawa College. The team is developing a DNA-based smart trap to detect invasive thrips that threaten Okinawa’s mango industry, providing farmers with a practical and eco-friendly solution for pest management. While the initial focus is on protecting local agriculture, the scalable design opens opportunities for applications across other crops and regions facing similar pest challenges.
